I don't know if this is the correct thread or not, but here it is anyway.

I am in the process of repainting my 97 and I'm in a little bit of a bind. I am painting the engine compartment right now but I can't get the AC / heater thingy off. I have all the bolts (that I know of) out but it seems like it is held in there by something else. Anyone know what it is?

I presume you are talking about the blower housing with the A/C evap coils inside.

I've only removed the blower once to clean it out and to back air flush on the A/C evap coils.

On the older Rangers the heater box is held to the firewall with four studs & Nuts.

ONE of the four the nut is inside the cab top of the passenger side footbox
near the inertia switch.
