I found out yesterday that I somehow cracked one of my front rotors so I am going to replace both. I was looking up prices online and found that a non-abs rotor is $43 and an abs one is $104. Originally my truck had 4 wheel abs, but it no longer works and I have no intentions of fixing it. Can I get away with using rotors that won't accomodate the abs or do I have to spend the extra $120?

Thats bullshit I buy rotors at advanced and pay around 35 bux per rotor and they come with the ABS ring in place. All of them do, Its the same rotor with the ring, I drive a 93 the front rotors arent all that different if at all, now rear wheel drive rotors are different animal I dont know about htem.

Well, if the ABS already isn't working then removing more parts isn't going to make it work any less.

Put the non-ABS ones on, and if you get unwanted ABS activation just unplug the module.

The teeth on the ring are what connects with a sensor tip that sends a signal to the abs, with no ring no signal, just tape the sensor out of the way or leave it bolted in place, with no teeth to contACT there will be no problems

I'm pretty sure the front sensors are the reason my ABS isn't working anyways. I just wanted to make sure there weren't any other reasons I couldn't use the non ABS rotors. Thanks for the help

Just be aware that the rotors for a 95-97 ARE different from earlier rotors.

but I can't imagine why the ABS rotors are more expensive.

There is NO contact between the tone ring and the sensor. There is a very small air gap and as the teeth on the ring pass through the magnetic field of the sensor they cause an electrical blip that can be translated into a speed signal.

but I can't imagine why the ABS rotors are more expensive.

Because the manufacturer wants them to be.

My mustangs ABS never worked either, So I never took a close look at it, didnt know about the air gap. Interesting for sure tho, thanks. I always wondered how come the damn thing never wore down though LOL,.

Always glad to explain stuff. I have a pair of sensors from a 150 sitting in the bed of the S-10, if I get around to it before the next scrap run I'll pull them apart and get some photos with explanations and such. A tech lesson of sorts.

Why is irrelevant. the fact is that 1990-94 Rotors will physically not fit on a 1995=-97 steering knuckle if you actually intend to reinstall the caliper brackets.

So if by "manufacturer" you mean Ford you are correct.

If you mean the ROTOR manufacturer, well thank you for playing but you are NOT a winner.

The changes to the knuckle to allow the use of the 95-up two-piston calipers
required moving the friction disc outwards (relative to everything else)

Basically, disregarding any differences between ABS and Non-ABS, the 1990-94 rotors will rub against the mounting ears on the steering knuckle that the caliper brackets bolt to.

Just because they look the same doesn't mean they are...

Wait.....

How did we go from price differences to fitment issues again? I think I missed something here.

Read through the entire discussion and see where someone else was commenting on earlier ABS Vs Non-ABS rotors fitting interchangeably and I posted a ""disclaimer".

And YOU argued with it by saying "because the manufacturer wants them to be different",Which may or may not be the case but the fact remains that they ARE different

I wasn't arguing that they earlier ones don't fit right. I know they don't just as well as you do.

I was responding to THIS:

Well, the thing is that there are no 1995 or 1996 Non-ABS 4x4 Rangers.

1997 was the only year the 1995-97 were available without it, so since higher pricing
is usually associated with lower production the statement that the ABS rotors are more is "bass akwards" relative to my personal experience.
