I am about to take my 2.8 apart an check on afue parts, my heads an my block.. I think they might be blown..if they are not I am goin to put the headgasket in an valve cover gaskets an get er back on the road..If the block is blown I am going to find a 2.8 block an swap everything from my current 2.8 to the new block...Itll be nice when I get the truck back up an runing.

Pull off both Valve covers and if there is yellow crap in it, Blown head or head gasket.

Is this the motor that poured water out the valve covers?

I believe iths the only motor he's got, so yes on the pissing valve covers. I personally say yank it, and get a decent replacement. Rangers ARE great trucks, and I know you wont hate your truck anymore after you get it running the way it should. But I think the current motor is wasted time.

swap it for another from a JY and consider it good as new. I wouldnt work on the current 2.8. It's dead.

I'm not saying to toss the idea of rebuilding just yet, once you pull it out of the truck it doesn't take long to take valve covers off, then the head and inspect it. Engines really are suprisingly durable SOMETIMES. Ones built Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are good, Monday and Friday, not good lol. But don't get hopes too high. Its a long shot considering its been run for a while with blown hg but its possible. I've seen crazy things with smaller ford motors.
Good luck.
