About to buy 91 ranger advice?

I'm looking at my neighbors 91 ranger has a 4 banger 160k on it 5speed manual new tires and new brakes. Reason for selling is he said the trans is stuck in third but the shifter still moves so I'm trying to find out what trans does this truck have? Also does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with it?

mazda m5od??.... it could have lost a pin on one of the rods inside the trans that moves the shift fork, making it be stuck in 3rd....it will need to come out and be opened up....or you could just find another trans at a junkyard or on CL

I would strogely suggest to find a Tracy before u buy. And make sure ur capable of making a swap. I paid 500 for mine used but I'm sure location dictates price.
Yes, m5od an u have to make sure it's from the same config, ex. 2.3l 2wd ect.

Yea it's a 2wd and I can pull it out and apart myself and so it's a Mazda m50d?

Also is there a better trans to put in it if it does need a trans?

The Mazda m50d is the better tranny. Good transmission but susceptible to leaking from the rail plugs, causing low fluid level and premature failure. I suggest finding the trs tech articles and reading in the transmission section, it will explain how to ID the transmission, how to fix the leak and other places to find a replacement tranny.
