My transmission doesn't always run right. It will miss the shift up. Take my foot off the gas and it engages. Doesn't slip while in gear just misses going up. What is the cause of this? Should I change the fluids and the filter? A full on flush?

if you look in the transmission section; there is a thread full of a4ld problems. i would link it for ya, but i'm on my phone and its a pain to link threads like that...

sounds to me like its the servo's or governor. but who knows without looking more into it... there's tons of info on here tho.

the best fix for an a4ld is an M5od-r1 swap

This is going to be my daughters first truck and she likes the auto trans. I've searched through 7 pages of transmission issues related to this transmission. Can't find one similar where it won't shift up properly. It's like it misses going into gear. The second I take my foot off the gas it shifts into gear. Sometimes it shifts up but doesn't feel as smooth as it should.

when mine did that... it was trash in the valve body.

but it could be a number of things... is it just 1-2 shift? or all of them?
check your detent cable, adjust it...

When you say trash in the valve body would doing a flush and filter change clear it up or did you have to pull it all apart to clean it up?

I will check the linkage.

check your tranny follow all the lines going up into the engine compartment make sure theyre all secure or are even connected to anything i had the same problem in my B2 but its a C5 i could get it to shift occasionally by thrashing the accelerator. Try shifting manually start in 1st then let it get up to revs and push the selector into 2nd

So? Tell her it's what you have and if she wants to drive she is going to learn to drive stick.

No, really, your best bet is having the trans rebuilt. A simple fluid exchange is unlikely to solve an issue like that. There are only about 500 things that could cause your issue and in a tranny that old the one that is actually at fault is anybody's guess.

I'm gonna start junkyard shopping for a newer one. Which year Rangers, BII's, and Exploders can I pick from to do the swap. My BII has the 2.9.

Any A4LD will bolt up as long as it had a 2.9 or 4.0 in front of it. The problem is you have to swap valve bodies if you get more than a year or so off in either direction. I would not advise that in your case since the valve body is high on my list of suspect parts for you condition.
