so I'm going to rebuild a later model a4ld from a 4.0 to replace my old one, I have a 2.9 '87. I understand I should use a 2.9l torque converter and will have to swap the 2.9 valve body, am wondering if there will be any issues with using my old shift linkage? and I'm not sure at what point ford moved the VSS and if I would have to rig up something for that or if it's still in the same place as long as it's an a4ld?, if theres anything else that has been an issue with this swap let me know but so far thats all Ive found, any help as always is appreciated thanks

i've got a 94, as far as i know the last year of that trans in a ranger, and i have the cable and speedo gear, no v.s.s. so you should be good.

Yup, 95 went to the 4r44e and 4r55e trans. The a4ld has a vss, the cable runs off that.

also, I am going to buy the atsg manual for the a4ld so I can have it on paper, but whats in the "update" manual and do I need it for a '93/'94 a4ld rebuild?

and another! I would assume I can re-use my old 2.9 bellhousing can anyone confirm/refute that?

2.9 and 4.0 are the same. I've got a 2.9l a4ld behind the 4.0l in my ranger.

Cooler line fittings are different sizes from the 87 to 88 in 88 they went to a larger cooler line fitting.

if you use the 4.0 torque converter you will pick up a little mileage around town... the lock-up setting is about 400 rpm lower and should get you 1-2 more mpg... just my $.02

I will definitely look into that, anything to save a dime or two :)

looks like noone sells tqs for the 2.9, has anyone else put the 4l tq in there? i cant find much about it.

also I am debating wether to buy the atsg manual for the a4ld or the ford service manual for my truck, anyone know if one or the other is better for rebuilding the trans?

i took my old one apart without any books, seemed easy enough to rebuild if my case didnt have a hole blown in it from the band adjuster.

i have one 4.0 torque converter sitting in my garage, and another coming out of the truck in a few weeks if you need one, i'm just not sure the condition
