A4LD transmission problems/questions

okay back at it with some more problems..
the transmission was doing perfectly fine and running smoothly after the fluid and filter change. took it out in the snow in the hills yesterday and voila i was stuck with no drive gears, though reverse and park work fine.
4x4 system was being weird and when i was shifting from reverse to drive and back tryin to get my truck unstuck, there were numerous clunking noises and harsh shifting between reverse and drive. this morning went back up to get my truck and it was in 2wd and it was working. went to lock hubs and put it in 4x4 and the lights were on (after it took numerous pushes of the button to get it into 4x4) so i knew the truck was in 4x4 but the front wheels were not spinning at all and i had no power to the rear wheels. still had reverse, and still had park. checked fluid and it was low again, so put fluid in and still the same condtion. so my question is, transmission or transfer case?

Replace the vacuum lines to your vacuum modulator and see if that helps with the shifting of the tranny. The modulator is on the passenger side by the cat there is a metal tube that goes up by the manifold vacuum fitting.

will try that. is this line something that couldve been knocked loose due to offroading?

If it came loose while 4x4ing something is wrong , It should be bolted to the trans up by the motor and clipped into a bracket back near the trans and transfer case mounting location , BTW When you replace Your Vacuum Modulator Be sure not to loose The Small Pin inside of it .

The vacuum lines get old and cracked especially close to the exhaust. If you change the modulator have a pan ready and the new modulator ready. Quickly remove the old one switch the drive pin and put the new one in hopefully you dont leak too much oil. Try new vacuum lines first. If there is oil in the vacuum line that is where it is going it is getting sucked into the cylinders thru a ruptured diaphram.
