My A4LD in a 1993 Ranger supercab 3.0l 2WD died ( http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50956&page=14 ) and I'd like to know which ones can swap for it with no changes? I don't want to have to use a different drive shaft or install a clutch, just other auto transmissions I could swap in. For instance, it seems the later auto trannies have more inputs from the PCM (powertrain control module), so do you get another PCM when you buy the trans? Is a wiring change needed?

How would you deal with the kick down cable when it is not used on a later transmission?

thanks,

John

Using a 1995 or later transmission would require a lot of complicated wiring work. Stick with a 1994 or older trans. And it must be a 2wd trans.

But, any trans that old is gonna be a real gamble. You may be best off rebuilding the one you have.

Thanks, I was wanting to find out about that...

I found that neither repair manual, the Ford or Haynes manual shows how the exhaust header stops the motor/trans assembly from tilting like they say to do.

Are 3.0l V6 motors so rare they don't mention details? Is there simpler way?

Oh well, going back out to take off the exhaust header.

the problem with getting ranger transmissions out is the y pipe which passes directly under the bellhousing and makes manuevers a bit more difficult, it can be done its just a bitch lol, once u got the old one out id hammer the body seam flat thats above the trans, as it will make reassembly easier...

the only trans that will work for u is a a4ld, or the old and hard to find c5

thanks mhughes. I'm showing this old truck to a possible buyer that has a manual trans for it. It had a good 17.5 year run for me, but the party's over.
