I have a 1988 ranger with a 2.9 and recently my A4LD automatic transmission went out and I want to swap it for a manual transmission. I have a Mazda M50D-R1 transmission from a 1994 3.0 ranger that works great I was wondering if there's any possibility that I could put that in my 88 ranger.

Yes you can put it in the bed. :icon_rofl:

Seriously, no, the 3.0l and the 2.9/4.0l bolt patterns are different.

What transmission would be the best option

md05 from a 2.9

What about the FM145? I have one sitting in my garage I would give him

The FM145 was only used from 85-87 would it still work? Or would I need an FM146 because mine is an 88

It would work but I believe it's 2 inches shorter than the FM 146. You would need the driveshaft from that vehicle.

If I do switch to a manual transmission will I need to have the computer reprogramed or some sort of electronical modification

I used the auto computer and only wire mod was the neutral switch
did this on two trucks so far

What do you have to do to the neutral saftey switch
