well i just bought a 1990 ranger 4.0 4x4 automatic. when i first start off the transmision shakes extremely bad. i know its not a ujoint i have checked them they seem fine. after ive accelerated a bit it smoothes out. also it does not always want to shift. i just changed the fluid + filter. there was no metal shaving in the fluid, but the fluid did smell/look burnt. does anyone know of what might be causing it, dirty valve body? i hope i dont have to rebuild it.

I think I am experiencing the same thing in my 87. It almost feels like a shudder when I accelerate. I have changed the carrier baring and mount and checked the U/V joints and they are good and tight. Anyway it seems to do it when its cold the worse, after it warms up it isn't as noticeable. I hope its not the tranny, but I think it is. I'm not sure what to tell you as I had this A4LD rebuilt about 70,000 miles ago, I would think it would have lasted longer than that. Hope you don't have to rebuild yours, but that is what it is looking like.
