a4ld scratching

i have a 93 ranger 4.o 2wd with an a4ld and i noticed that its is starting to scratch when its shifting and even some times making a scratching when in park. i have no skill with a transmission and was wanting to know what you all think is the problem. i did check the fluid and it is full but is probaly in need of a change. my question is what do you think is wrong how could i fix it or how much do you think it will cost to get fixed, or if a simple fluid and filter change hopfuly fix the problem? input is much liked and thanks a head of time

Could you describe your problem better? is it like pump cavation or a hydraulic wine?

im not sure what those sound like but the sound i get wile accelerating sounds like scratching from the heat shields on the cats. but its coming from the transmission that is 100% positive. it sounds like the gears are slightly grinding on some thing

Cavitation sounds like alot of "chatter". In industrial pumps (non car related of course) it sounds like you are pumping rocks.

when mine had that kind of noise, i dropped the trans pan and found chunks metal from the band adjuster and part of the actual band itself. definitely pull your pan and check for shrapnel

i dont know much about transmissions so im not sure what that is but if there is just some normal shaveing in there nothing major is it some thing a filter and new fluid could fix? also how much did it cost to fix the band and all of that of your transmission?

Ok, it only does it when its cold, and its louder with higher RPMs???

If so its your torque converter, and it may have already damnaged your pump.

all you need to repair this is, common sence and basic hand tools.

no it dose it mainly when its warm once in a while wile when its cold its cold. well its like 30 out side so ill have to wait till next week to open it up and check. out of curiosity is there a way i can look into the tourq converter?

no there sealed units. the filter may be cloged, try to find a screen type, ita all I use.

ok i will try and fined a screened type. so another question is i kind of want to start this tomorrow and continue working on it next week would it hurt if i drained all the fluid and it sat over the weekend?

no it wont hurt, but no dust or dirt can get into the trans.

ok ill screw the pan and old gasket on the keep dirt out and ill post up with my findings

i just picked up a new trans out of an explorer in the junk yard and swapped it out, too many parts were banged up from those pieces working their way down to the pan to try to fix.

ok so i didnt get to it this weekend i ended up out of town but tomorrow im opening it up. a question i had was i think im suspose to clean it but with what im sure water is a no no and i think im suspose to use a solvent wich all i have cleaning agents wise is sea foam and purple power. could i just use a clean rag or old t shirt to wipe it down?

ok i opened it up and fluid was a darker red still able to see throu thou verry very few shavings almost none and they were small but filter looked clogged. could the noise of been only cause of the filter?
