a4ld rebuildable or not?

its a 1990 ranger 4.0. the transmision is out of a 93 explorer.
so anyways the fluid is FULL of metal shavings and litterally looks like shinny red glitter!. the transmison still somewhat worked when i parked the truck, it will go into gear(its slow, and have to rev up the engine to get it to go in) both reverse and forward gears work(it was shifting through the gears, first sounded like a standard transmision though, and reverse slipped bad,). it seems to be binding up somewhere(after its in gear i have to use about 2300 rpm to get moving in first gear)
so anyways does it sound like its rebuildable or not? i will do the rebuild myself(first time). special tools?

It may be rebuildable. Run a magnet through the fluid after draining it. If the shavings stick to the magnet then you have pieces of gears in there and you probably grenaded a gear set. If it doesn't stick you have pieces of the aluminum case in there and it's pretty well FUBAR.

In either case, unless you are a mechanic, or an auto tech student who is going to be doing the work in a transmission class and looking for info on this particular trans, I recommend against trying to build it yourself.

well i decided not to rebuild this trans, i have instead picked up another a4ld that has bad overdrive. although this is my first rebuild i am very sure that i wont have any problem with it,

the first thing i noticed on the trans is that the overdrive servo is craked and even has pieces broke off of it. before even pulling the OD drum out i could see it was bad and needed to be replaced. the OD band was burnt bad and was definitally slipping and dug DEEP into the drum. the rest of the trans seems to be in great shape. even though it seems all to be in great shape i am still going to replace a lot of COMMON failure parts.
