I've been reading as much as I can on the forum regarding the A4ld. The new BII isn't shifting unless I do it manually with the shifter. Then I have first and second. Won't shift in the drive position. If I'm in second and shift to drive it feels like it's missing that gear. The engine revs up to around 3000 rpms.

Would it be a good idea to drain the pan and change the filter? Does this ever help this problem or is it a waste of money?

I read in the tech section about an off road race A4ld. Is that only in the later models 90 and up or can one be made to achieve that with the 87 that I have? Sounds like the 90 and up have a computer control. Am I stuck using 86-89 A4ld because they aren't computer controlled for the torque converter lock up?

I hae zero experience with automatic transmissions.

This is a sign of a bad trans. And it's typical of these trans. It's probably history . . find something else.

When I get home(out of town work sucks) I will check the vacuum. Is there a certain amount necessary?

You should have 17-20 hg at an idle usually it is a cracked vacuum line between the modulator and the metal tube being so close to the cat but the diaphram in the modulator can be bad also. If you have over 15 hg at the modulator. The way it works is with low vacuum pressure at the modulator it boosts control pressure in the valve body making the tranny down shift so it will not upshift. There are two types of modulator for the A4LD one non adjustable and another adjustable get the adjustable and you will be able to adjust the shift points. Adjust it after the tranny is up to temp hope thats all it is. GL
