I recently got two rangers, 86 ranger with 2.3 automatic in pretty bad shape but runs decent and 1989 Ranger with 2.9 the problem with the 2.9 is the transmission is bad. From reading on here both trucks have the A4LD tranny but can you take one from a 2.3 and bolt strait up to 2.9? Ive seen some people say you can others says no, people at local pick n pull says it wont match up. So question is does anyone know for sure if it has to be a tranny out of 2.9?

Sorry no, to you don't know or you cant use tranny out of 2.3?

Will not work. The bellhousing is integral to the case of the trans, and the two engines use different bellhousings.

Something from a 2.8, 2.9 or 4.0 should bolt up, but I don't know automatics well enough to tell you what'll plug + play and shift properly.

Thanks for the info saved me from pulling the tranny out of the 86 that would have been waste of time. Would it matter if I got one from LWB since mine Is SWB?

I guess another question would be what would my choices be for a 89 2.9 automatic?? any better tranny than A4LD, could anyone give me years it would work for 4.0 and other models?

AFAIK the a4ld 2.8, 2.9 or 4.0 is the only auto trans that will cross over. The newer 4r44, 5r** etc are the same as the a4ld but more computer controls. I'm not a guru on this stuff so take this with a grain of salt.
Edit;
I just remembered that the early 2.8's came with a c-3 and/or a c-5 three speed auto with removable bellhousing. If you can find a bell-housing you can use a c-4 three speed auto also.
