first off, forgive me for being ignorant to automatics. i hate them with a passion and will only drive manuals. with that said, im trying to help my cousin figure out whats wrong with his mustang. its a 91 with a 2.3 and an a4ld. he was doing some running around and the thing just plain quit when he was in a parking lot. he said that if he puts the selector in 1 or R, it will move and doesnt seem to slip. any other selection acts like neutral. hes got some crazy uncle telling him 'just have the damn thing rebuilt, its not worth working on' but i am curious if theres any modulator or relay that may be at fault. he wants to do a fluid/filter change but i told him im not really optimistic that it will help anything. im going over to look at it on monday or tuesday, i was hoping i could get a little insight into the situation. i figured even though its a mustang, TRS has the most knowledgeable people around, and it's a trans used in rangers too...

Check the fluid level. Perhaps adjust the bands. Check out the A4LD sticky at the top.

Forward clutch failure is the most likely failure. Easiest is to just source out another transmission... cheapest way too! And, yes, you will have low in "1" but not in "D" with a forward clutch failure.

okay thanks, thats what i was afraid of. anybody think its worth the $20 for a vacuum modulator just to try and see? or doesnt it sound like that could be an issue?

oh and ive been trying to convince him to swap in a t5, a friend of mine has an entire 5 speed swap ready to go, all parts included that he would sell my cousin... but for some reason he likes his automatics... i dont get it haha

so the fluid was low, we changed it and threw on a new filter. it's better, but still not right. it has 1, 2 and D back, but still nothing at all in OD. we drove it around some and it does shift 3 times, but wont lock up the TC. i told him i still dont trust it and not to drive it any farther from his house than he is willing to walk home haha. anyways, any ideas now?
