in my 89 ranger 4x4, the bands let go in a rebuilt tranny. less than 10k miles. so i decide rather than rebuilding it again to swap it for a 4.0l a4ld which are supposed to be "beefy" compared to a 1st gen a4ld. i go get one from a salvage yard. after the swap was complete i took it for a test drive around the block, and it did fine. i pull into my driveway and without turning the truck off i check the fluid and top it off. go to put it in drive and nothing, nada, zilch.wont kick into drive gear. it still shifts into reverse with no trouble. ive drained the thing, changed the "valve body" from the old a4ld to the new and still wont shift into drive. i changed this because i thought maybe one of the solonoids was bad. WHAT DO I DO? can it be fixed with pulling the whole thing out again?
