Well, after 160,000 the tired old mushy trans gave up the ghost. I was backing my ATV trailer into the FLAT, LEVEL driveway and the Ranger wouldn’t do it. It just slipped in reverse. So off to the local trans shop. $1,750, 3 planetary gear sets, a reverse band, and 1 valve body later I am back on the road with a 12 month 12k mile warranty. It is extremely nice to have firm shifts again.
The tech said that the planetary’s had not failed, but were extremely worn. Anybody ever heard of that on a 2003 2wd Ranger Edge with a 3.0?
Yes, that’s a chunk of change. But I love my Ranger, and its in great shape. I could not replace it for that with an equal vehicle. After all, 160k on an original auto trans is not bad. It’s not a record, but it’s not bad.
