I have a 1986 Ranger standard bed 2.9 2wd . The questions are as follows

1 I have a 5sp in my truck now but what trans will fit without any problems
2 I have checked out the section on putting a 4.0 cluch on a 2.9 does include 2wd's

2 yea the cluch is the same for 2wd

You looking for a manual or auto?

An FM145/6 from a 2.9 will bolt up, and a M5OD from a 4.0 will bolt up. You could also get a TK, but I suggest the M5OD.

I suggest the M5OD.

You'll need one from a 4.0 Ranger or Explorer, and sometimes you cna find them attached to 2.9's, although, it's not as common

The M5OD R-1 from a 2.9L or a 4.0L have the same bolt pattern and will fit your engine. The 4.0L version has slightly closer ratio gears which I like on my 2.9L Ranger with stock tires and 3.73 rear end.

The 10" clutch upgrade worked out well for me. The 4.0L manual starter you need for the upgrade is beefier than the stock 2.9L version also. Make sure you get the 6 bolt fly wheel since they changed to an 8 bolt version in 97.
