a friend of mine is looking for her frist 4wd...

there are ways to get her to drive a stick. pretend to sprain your ankle and tell her she has to drive out of the woods or spend the night with no blankets, tent, or food and she has to gather fire wood. She will chose drive the stick. That trick works 100% of the time.

hahaha well my ranger isnt road worthy yet and my ....k5 is a auto lol

Mid 80s everythign is junk?

Yeah the cars.....Trucks peaked when cars (for the most part) sucked. Mid-late 70's into the mid 80's some of the toughest trucks ever built we're built.

Ask just about anyone, they will say the 73-79 F series was THE toughest pickup ever built in the past 50 years. The 73-87 C\K series Chevys a close second.

They may not be the most powerful, or the prettiest, or the nicest or whatever, but pound for pound they will take more abuse then anything ever built, you can run them through fields, overload the piss outta them, run into things, etc, and they wont quit.

80-86 Fords wernt bad trucks either, they were tough, but the later ones started dabbling in things like Computer Carbs and O\D trans, which tarnished there rep.

Not all cars from the time period were bad though....just classed under "junk" without getting fair credit. LTD II's, Monacos, etc, were very good cars. It was the Fairmonts, Granadas, Pintos, Chevettes, Monzas, Versailles, etc that were junk.

Just tell her she can pay the $2500 repair bill to rebuild the automatic when it grenades. With automatics, it's a matter of when, not if.

Or she can pay $800 at the most to put a clutch in very rarely if she's easy on it.

Out of all the SUVs and trucks, I would have to go with the 4Runner for durability. It's got the best automatic out of the Jeeps and Fords, unless she goes with a C4/C5, and then she'll complain about not having overdrive.

she will drive real lightly, ill make shure of that. ill teach her

Dude, you wont win that argument with me. 80 - 86 we saw some of the biggest piles of crap to roll off an assembly line for exactly the reason you mentioned. they were experimenting with electronically controlled carbs and restrictive emission controls when they should have been switching to fuel injection in the late 70's. I wouldn't give 2 bits for a late 70's - mid 80's 1/2 ton, or 2 bits for a 81-86 3/4 or 1 ton because of the restrictive emissions.
The steel used in the frames and body panels was inferior and prone to rust. the paint was crappy and prone to fade and peeling. The 80's was a bad decade because of the change over in technology. Interim technologies always suck. I'll give you the fact that 73-79 f-series was the toughest 3/4 and 1 tons built but they are surpassed by anything built after 97.

Man your smoking some good shit.

Take a 07 F150....and a 77 F150....overload them both by about 1000lbs in the bed, point them through a plowed corn field, and do a full throttle romp across it, and keep doing it untill one breaks something.

Guranteed it'll be the 08.

Your telling me Torsion bars (or coilovers) are tougher then I Beams? A 9 Inch rear is weaker then a 8.8? A 4R100 (or whatever then run nowadays) can take more abuse then a C6? The pop can like body panels ae stouter then the real steel they used back then? The frames might have finally gotton to the strength point they were.....but not untill recently.....and how often did you ever see an old Frame give out?

Give it 30 years.....i gurantee you wont see as many 07s then as you do 70's and 80's trucks now.

You'll be drinking beer made from the heads on the Triton Engines....and boneyards will be full of the 3\4 and 1 ton trucks cause no one can afford the fuel for them.

Dustin
