the shifter is way sloppy on my 1986 (11/85 build date) 2.3 4x4 and i want to fix this -so 1. is there a hurst shifter i can use? 2.with trans in truck what is best way to id trans type? 3.if hurst is NO GO any other suggestions?

I know Hurst lists a shifter for '88 - '05 Rangers, but I don't know about your '86.
Have you tried to google some sites that carry parts for older vehicles?
