I have a few questions about some of the wierd noises i've been hearing from my ranger.

Since i've got it, whenever the clutch pedal was let out all the way, it would make this wierd sound, kind of like a rubbing against something, not really grinding, it's really hard to explain.

another noise is when my hubs are locked in 4 wheel drive, whenever i let off the gas, i can hear a wierd noise coming from the front left wheel, it's so hard to explain the noise but i figured some experts out there would know what i'm talking about.

Thankz for the help

When you say clutch let out all the way, you mean engaged? I dunno about that noise.

The 4wd noise, I got that on both my '90 4x4 with a 2.9 and my '91 Navajo with a 4.0. I just thought it was normal to hear the front end.

It doesn't make the noise while the clutch pedal is depressed, but makes it when the pedal is out. You may have a noisy throwout bearing. Next time it is running and in neutral just slightly put pressure on the clutch pedal and see if the noise goes away. If it goes away then you have a noisy but not bad throwout bearing. It may last 2 hours or 2 years.
The 4x4 part of it. Is the noise coming from the wheels or from under you? Does it make more noise while in 4 wheel drive or out? Might want to pull your front tires and rotors off and check your wheel bearings. The stub shaft where the bearings ride and the axle shaft passes through has a bearing that keeps the axle from tearing the hub up. Pull that hub and put some grease on that as that may be your noise.

Most likely someone replaced the clutch and never changed the pilot bearing. MIne did this and was all shot to shyt. Also when I replaced my mustang clutch thenew plate was thicker than stock and rubbed on the shift fork all the way to tennessee.

Thankz for the help guyz. And the noise happens when the clutch is NOT pushed in. But when i begin to push in a little it does seem to go away. and that was my real question. Is it a defect and will it harm the transmision. Well we replaced the clutch by ourselves and my friends dad gave us a big hand. and we never replaced the pilot bearing because he said it was good. but i guess that could be it. My dad thinks it's the synchro bearings in the transmission thats making the noise, but he says he could be wrong. and the noise concerning the 4x4. It only makes the noise when the Hub is locked. when it's unlocked there's no noise. Thankz Explorin for suggestion.

If you didnt replace the pilot bearing get under there and replace it. Also make sure you tightened down all the pressure plate bolts to spec. I just remember hydraulic clutches dont have forks, just throwout bearings. So most likely its the pilot bearing, if you dont have a bearing puller get a wooden dowel the same diameter as the inside of the bearing and fill the bearing with grease then put the dowel in there and tap with hammer it will hydraulically push the bearing out. Least it shoudl, wear safety goggles.

i think Explorin94 called it right... clutch sounds like the throwout bearing. for the 4x4 noise, when you are checking the wheel bearings, also check the hub to make sure it hasn't gone bad. matter of fact, probably should check everything on the passenger side as well for preventative measures.
just my $.02.

Yeah, must be the throwout bearing. Mine made that noise for a while real bad, then suddenly stopped and has never made the noise since. I'm sure it's going to fail eventually, but like he said it could be 2 hours or 2 months (although mine's been about a year lol).

thanks for the suggestions once again. Everything was tightened down to spec. The clutch replacement we did wasn't no " I think this is right" we did it all according to the book so everything was properly done. It was making this noise before the replacement too, but when the clutch was blown, it stopped. So now the question is. is it the pilot or throwout bearing? feellnfroggy, it sounds like your saying you don't have to take out the tranny. Am i right or? Because if i'd have to take out the transmition again, i would have to wait for spring to come around.

the noise with the hubs locked in could also be a bad joint in the axle. lock the hubs and rotate the drive shaft while watching the axle to see if the inner shaft moves more than the outer part of the shaft.

if it quits with the clutch depressed it is the throw out bearing

thankz. But we replaced the throwout Bearing forsure. so is that just the way it is? i can't imagine a brand new throwout bearing making this loud of a noise, i guess it isn't so loud, but it's noticable. Another question is. when my u-joint went between my subdriveshaft and main, the subdriveshaft would still spin when in neutral and clutch let out. I heard somewhere that that is normal, so i'm just checking with you guys
