I'm new to the site . Good site by the way. I have a 1994 ranger ext. cab with the 4.0l automatic tranny, and push button 4x4. We got some snow over the weekend and I wanted to use my 4wd . I pushed the button and I could hear the transfer case engage. started to drive and no 4wd. I looked over some past threads on here and it seems that the auto locking hubs are junk. which I think is the problem. I can have the truck in 2wd and turn the front drive shaft by hand , put it in 4wd and I can not turn it by hand which to me says that the transfer case has engaged and is working. Tonight I took the hubs off and cleaned them good put it back together and still no 4wd. Should I just replace my hubs with manuals? Does this problem sound like the hubs or something else? Thank You for the help.

Automatic hubs are very prone to failure. They usually make a fair bit of noise while failing though.

Prime example is driving with the 4x4 on and 1 side will sound like it slipped a cam and goes clunk fairly loudly.

But you didn't report any noise, or at least haven't mentioned if there is any noise yet.

In any case I would put the truck on 4 stands with all 4 wheel off the ground and then engage the 4x4. just to confirm that its not engaging. If they are engaging while on the stands its still possible they are failing when they are under stress.

Get a set of manual from a junk yard they are fairly common. Even if the autohubs have not failed yet... they Will!

I have a clunking sound but it is not loud at all. it's not coming from the tranfer case or the front diff. it has to be the hubs. The conversion to manual hubs seems pretty straight forward. It's not hard is it?
Thanks for the help.

I looked in the "parts for sale" section and found some good factory hubs .The price is right, should have them next week. hopefully this fixes the problem. I would love to put some manual lockers on but money is kind of tight.
