I have a few differnt issues wth my 2.9 its in a 1986 ranger its 4x4, 5 speed

1. im not sure if its the battery alternator or starter but if it sits for longer then two hours I need to jump it I was told my batter is good and i was told it could be a weak starter what do you think?

2 I cant go over 65mph when ever the motor is at higher rpms it stutters even at lower gears if I dotn shift right away,i was told could be sending unitfor the gas so I thought about pushing the clutch in and reving motor to see if it still did it and it doesn't, there is a leak on the top of the gas tank could it be sucking air??

something is wearing down your battery. its like leaving your headlights on, its gonna wear down the battery and cause it to not be able to start. do you have any trail lights on your bumper or a roll bar that are covered and you dont know they are on? any winches or car alarms or remote starter or anything other than stock?

for the other problem check, it sounds to me like it is starving for fuel at high rpms. first stop is fuel filter. if its clogged it may choke out at high fuel flow. check your hose on your Fuel pressure regulator for gasoline. if it has gas in it, its bad and needs replacing. good luck.

Agree with low_five...very good suggestions. especially the fuel filter, good place to start.

bit concerned about the leak on top of the gas tank....could be...
the fill tube is deteriorating...or
a leaking return line...or
a leaking pressure line....which would cause lack of fuel supply and or draw air.

easiest way to get to the tank is to remove the bed of the truck...no the bed is not that heavy, but will require help from at least 1 other to lift it off.

thanks alot guys

only thing that i have thats not stock on my truck is a CB and a linar(cb amp) but I shut them off when I leave my truck and latly have un hooked them completely untill I figure out thwta wrong with it ,when taken the bed off what will need to be unhooked just the tail lights?

i was readin another thread and seen somethign about a groudn wire I look mine is not connected (the one on the head) what type if wire should be used to replace it ?

also what is need to pull the bed off as far as tool I seen it and a star bit bold anything else ... I'll have to buy or barrow the star bit

First off slow down and take your time you will save alot of time banging your head for nothing. Tackle the charging system first do you have a volt meter and how did you find out the battery was good. Put it on a slow charge overnight and let it charge all the way it should have 12.5 volts fully charged and disconnect it from the truck when charging or just get a new one. Check/clean all the grounds battery to engine, engine to chassie, battery to chassie and all grounds you can find take them apart and sand them metal to metal and make sure they are tite. when you hook the battery up pos first then touch the neg to the post if you get a little spark that is the computer and radio if you get a big spark you probably have a short and dont connect it until you find it. there is a good section in the tech library on charging you need power before anything else will work correctly so get that done first then you can work on the ignition and starter and possibly a big part of your other issues also. first things first
