I am thinking of getting a 92 3500 srw truck for a parts truck to put the motor in the ranger it a a manual with 105000 ish on it. my question is how heavy is it and is there a good auto trans that i can put with it. my other options are a 7.3 that will need a lot more work it need a turbo and to rebuild trans the 7.3 would be easier in some ways because the axles i have are from a 2006 SD f350 srw with lockers and 4.88 in them.

Good luck.

Thats some serious motor your talking about there. Why? the weight alone is to much for a ranger frame. Not to mention the torque. a stock frame wouldnt handle it. The 4bt ranger i saw had a fully boxed frame.

its funny this post is up cause i was thinkin bout a 4cyl diesel in my ranger today but yea as far as an inline 6 or powerstroke in a ranger geeeshhhhhhhh im pretty sure the front fenders would have to be lengthened and yea the frame boxed and some serious front springs

I have seen a couple 6cyl cummins swapped into 70s era fords and they have to move the firewall to get one in a fullsize

so my opinion, the time, work would not be worth the outcome but yea anything can be done if you want to bad enough

No way for a 6BT to fit without major body mods.........but a 4BT will fit just fine.

wouldn't it be fairly easy to modify the floor in a ranger to allow the cummins to sit 7" back into the body, giving the necessary room to squeeze in a 6bt? the frame flex will be the biggest issue, but if time and money arent that big a deal(specifically time) go for it. ill be watching closely and offering whatever help i have. i'd love to see a first gen 6bt. in fact i've considered this swap very seriously very recently!

The frame would handle the torque as long as you dont do anything to serious with it.

The front suspension would be begging for mercy though.

Google "4BT Ranger" it shows a ranger with one. However........one year out of all the years of going to the Jamboree at Indianapolis I did see a 4BT in a Ranger. Wasn't the cleanest install I had ever seen but it was there and it ran. The funny thing about it was it was the same body style as mine with the newer splash bed. My truck was taller so it was a mini me. :)

a mild 4bt or stock pre 94 oem offering wont hurt a ranger frame in a street application.

a cummins 6 bt will require body mods of some sort depending on the model of ranger and the year of the engine.

with ttb my ranger was over 2900 pounds on the front axle, and i beat the holy living hell out of it regularly...

.... with a d60 and 6.5 diesel i am @ 3600 pounds with street tires and cruise weight.(yeah thats just the front axle) with stout springs it handles great on the road belive it or not...

some would ....actually quite a few argue my frame is considerably weaker then stock. maybe it is....i know the back part from the rear of the cab on out is. i am running similar power levels to a stock efi truck 302 currently. with a turbo and a few other mods i will be in excess of stock 1st gen 12 valve models and par with 1st gen psd. but with a much quieter engine that is 3-400 pounds lighter.

regardless, no worries on the frame for normal use and the light wheelin/recoveries i currently do.. once i have lockers again the frame will be beefed for sure.

with tib or ttb i would run 250 van springs...but likely go to 44 outers or high end stang stuff for brakes on a 2wd.

but extending the wb and running a solid axle on a 4x4 or a heavy mod m2 setup on a 2wd is obviously the best choice for a 6bt.

easiest is the 4bt and turbo mechanical injected 6.5/6.2 gm diesels for medium power applications. for top economy the 4bt.

i have not tried a powerstroke yet.

but you never know whats next for me:dunno:

Well i have put the 6bt on hold for a bit but have the hole running truck in storage till i make a choice. i have a f250 that i may use the 351w for the ranger and put the 6bt in it for a tow rig.

well its definitely do-able... and i was considering it heavily on the 4bt. At least until i priced out everything.

i figured for the price i could go buy a dodge cummins :)

Type 6.2 diesel on EBay and then type Cummins and you'll see why a 6.2/6.5 makes more sense. You can scrape together a GM diesel Ranger for almost nothing. All you are pushing with it is a 4,000# Ranger. I can assure you that with a turbo you won't be disappointed. I use mine pretty regularly to haul around some combination of my junk and it's no slacker. This is a 10,000# trailer. Pulls about 7psi and 700F while accelerating in normal traffic with that load--about 16,000# gross. I've had this at 80mph before following a line of cars around a truck. I'm sure I could pull it 90+ if I wanted. I don't worry about at all--just watch the exaust temp. This motor is everything you want out of a diesel and a good diesel for a Ranger--unless you want an 80hp aluminum diesel with a timing belt.
