on startup I'm getting a whinning sort of whistling sound from under hood and only last a few seconds, and the other day my battery light came on, but after half a day the light shut off. is my altenator on its way out? Second, this has only happend once, but I got a single beep on start up, and about every ten minutes It would single beep again. I already had the beeping because of the instro lights were out but i have fixed that. Just seeing if anyone else ever had the single beep and what it might mean. Thanks.

Take the belt off & see if you still get the noise, you could have a tensioner that is going bad, and allowing the belt to slip a bit, or a stretched belt. as far as testing the alternator you can take it off & many of the chain automotive stores will test it for free, although there is no guarantee that you will get someone testing it that knows what they are doing. You can test the alternator voltage output by checking battery voltage with the vehicle running & turning on the lights heater etc. The alternator functioning like it should, the voltage will be 13.9 - 14.2. I usually check from the cigarette lighter or power port, those seem to give an accurate assessment of the entire system, anything much less on voltage & your alternator is heading south.
