friends, I'm shopping these Rangers and my two candidates are an 01 3 L that's decent and a 1988 2.9L with supposedly 70,000 miles, looks a little ragged, and A/C does not work.

Should I "bake in" a $1000 repair for the A/C, assuming the compressor is damaged, all parts in the system need replacing????

any other tips? I may get a chance to test drive today. I'll hold the brakes and pressure the motor to see if its burning any oil under load, check for leaks, pull the stick and look for foam/water/discoloration...:icon_idea: what else? its a 5-speed so that's in my favor i guess..

its pretty cheap, but I'll bid cheaper :headbang:

check out both...throuoghly
It all depends on how deep your pockets are?
and whether you like the 1st gen=88' or 3or4th gen? =01'

Yup, $1000 is reasonable for a non-working A/C. Odds are, it has been that way for a long time and there are quite a bit of corrosion products in there. Even if it's just a leak.

But that's $1000 from blue book, not from asking price.

check out the aftermarket a/c units--they're about the same price as a rebuild + you won't have any "old" stuff to go bad later on (compact all-in-one a/c&heater fits under dash where original stuff is(was)--I'm gonna put one on my '89 to '36 conversion in the "metamorphisis" section....

Go wtih the 255 A/C

(2 windows down and 55mph :) )

later,
Dustin

Umm, with a "rebuild," you won't have any old parts either.

Plus, it's a whole heck of a lot easier to get replacement parts for when it breaks.
