A.C. magnet plate.

This might be the wrong forum but......I'm helping out a friend with a 2002 Taurus w/3.0 vulcan. His magnetic plate on the AC is fubared. Can I just remove the 10mm Bolt and the plate and be on my way without any A.C..

if you remove the retaining bolt that holds the clutch hub onto the spline of the compressor shaft there will now be nothing to keep the hub, pulley & the coil in place. Starting the engine will lead to much unwanted woe & misery.

Lol. We don't want woe and misery! Can I just pop in a new magnet (clutch hub) or is there more to it?

I take it that the bearing has decided to *not do this anymore* and the hub & the pulley (the pulley being the item that is moving) are rubbing together.

If both are still serviceable then a new bearing is in order.

If one or both are not then pick up a complete clutch assembly.

I'm not very familiar with the AC system. All I know is the 3 stubs on the magnetic plate are fubared. The plate is loose. Should I assume the rest of the clutch, bearing etc is fubared also?

I see what has happened...the OEM Ford hub is a two piece assembly, the inner portion is the hub, outer section has the machined surface that contacts the pulley, these are riveted together by six rivets in total, three that are close to the center and three outer that go thru three rubber shock cushions.

I'd suggest picking up a replacement clutch hub from Rockauto. The last time I was in there it was a Motorcraft item.

To get the clutch hub off you will need to prevent the hub/compressor from spinning as you turn out the bolt. There is a tool for this but with some *where there's a will there's a way* imagination one can get the bolt out.

There is a decent Youtube video on this process....* a picture is worth a thousand words*.......the Ford manual is very vague where photos are concerned.

since you're only removing the hub you don't have to go all the way...

the *spacer* should be inside the hub, pick it out and reuse it.

When reassembled check the clearance between the hub & pulley, it should be somewhere between 015 thou & 030 thou.
