First post.

I searched the forums (also Google and Bing) and did not find any previous discussions. I'll post photos when I'm done.

2001 Ford Ranger Edge regular cab with the 4.0L SOHC.

While driving home through Houston my a/c compressor started to make a buzzing noise when the clutch would engage. After a few minutes the air was no longer cold and the buzzing was a little more pronounced. I stopped, checked the clutch (it was off center), the a/c compressor pulley (bearing felt fine), and continued the drive home without a/c. ...I'm rather thankful the Texas heat hasn't kicked-in yet.

To replace the clutch assembly and/or the pulley go here: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45199
Thanks to shadetree.

This is what I purchased: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...-Air_3891623-P_385_R|GRPACPTAMS_888706586____

What I found: Two of the three rivets (plugs?) holding the clutch disk to the bracket were gone. When I removed the clutch assembly the disk fell to the pavement... the lone rivet was merely keeping the disk from spinning like a hoola-hoop around the compressor shaft.

I gave the pulley a few spins and there was no play, grinding, or noise from the bearing... then a ring (of sorts) fell in my hand; it was a bearing cage. I removed the snap ring and removed the pulley. The front of the the bearing was missing a couple balls and they were all cooked, but the balls in the back of the bearing were shiny with a bit of lube still in there.

The windings for the electromagnet are corroded, but I'm not sure how to get it off; it's a press fit. Since the clutch assembly was held on with a single bolt and slid right off I'm not sure if the shaft is strong enough to support the load of a jaw puller. The only threaded surface is for the single 7mm bolt that held the clutch assembly so that's definitely not strong enough, or large enough, to hold a press tool.

Is there a specialty Ford/Motorcraft tool for the electromagnet? Should I pay for labor and have a shop change the coil? Something I'm missing?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
