have someone crack open the a/c compressor of a 3.0? I need to know if there is a diagram cause I need to change the gaskets because I have a gas leak just in the middle of the a/c compressor, any help would be good thanks!

i thought you couldnt repair those yourself, you just bought another unit? if i still had my old one that i took out 2 yrs ago id give it to you, the compressor was good the line leaked so i took it off, got a 3mpg mileage improvement when i did and i dont use a/c anyway, but if you can repair it cheers.

the system needs to be prefessionally discharged before opening and im not aware of anyplace that sells internal parts for the compressor, but if its something as simple as a leak, you can remove and attempt to reseal it.

the a/c compressor has an idler pulley mounted to the front that the belt rides on. when the a/c is not running, there is no extra drag on the engine. either you were using your a/c alot (it runs in defrost), or your milage improvements came from somewhere else.

wrong, pay attention to your trk as it idles, youll notice the a/c clutch kicks on and off even with the a/c off, this way the freon is circulated. stagnated freon causes seizure of the parts so it has to be circulated. its the kick on kick off that across the range that caused there to be a drag on the engine, causing the engine to use fuel, use less, use fuel use less. maybe newer trks dont, but mine and a few others i seen did, and a popular mileage increase mod on a lot of vehicles is unplugging the a/c compressor clutch wire so the clutch freewheels all the time.

as i said in my previous post, the a/c runs while the controles have defrost selected (defrost or defrost and floor). this is to dehumidify the incoming air and improve defroster performance, not to prevent "stagnant freon" (which doesnt exists).

select panel with a/c off and the compressor will not cycle.

mine was kicking in in the off position, might have been a problem w/ my a/c controller but it kicked on and off w/ everything off. my fiances 05 chevy w/ dual climate control does the same thing, everything will be off and you can hear the belt chirp while cruising cuz the a/c is kicking on and off. my friends dodge does it too. the guys i was running around w/ up north for a time clued me in on it, they all unplugged their a/c compressors in the winter time to help w/ mileage issues. but like i said newer models may not do it and it may have just been a problem w/ my trk, i just noticed it everytime i was under the hood checking my tranny fluid w/ the engine running like your supposed to. look at everything and the a/c would kick on and im like wtf? so i go in the cab to turn it off and its off, made no sense. the a/c instructor at the votech i was at told me that if a/c systems arent circulated theyll cause seizure and possibly legionnaires disease from the algae that accumulates in the system and they do it as a safeguard. i always took that to fact but when i tried to use my a/c the one time in 3yrs it didnt work cuz i had a pinhole in the line and all the freon leaked out over time. so i cut the lines and chunked the compressor and installed a shorter belt, the engine felt more free (prob from pulling a dry compressor) and my mileage improved, so needless to say i was happy. if its hot i use military a/c of 2/20. 2 windows down, 20 mph. then again i like the louisiana heat too, good convertible/windows down/bike riding weather!

Your ac instructor at votech was an idiot.

might be the case but i fig somebody that was certified all the way across the board wasnt, but life experience has also taught me since then that there are a lot of ppl that are booksmart w/ no common sense too. he had more experience from me on the subject and a few other ppl i knew that worked in the a/c field agreed so i didnt think anything of it. like i said tho when i took it off everything ran better so i was happy w/ it. i still dont understand why the a/c kicks on and off on so many vehicles at idle w/ everything off.

any help would be good thanks!

If you need repair parts this is a good place; http://www.acsource.com/index.asp

I replaced the shaft seal on my compressor with a different truck. They're pretty simple inside. You'll need torque specs for assembly as the housing bolts were fairly high torque value. Keep everything very clean and if possible don't allow oil to empty. If so replace only what was lost.

i cant speak for the system dodge and chevy use...maybe they run their compressors all the time. i dont know.

all i know is that a properly functioning ford will only cycle the a/c if the a/c is on or defrost is selected. my truck did, my escorts do, and every other ford ive paid attention to did.

I think algae needs sunlight to form, at least it needs water which should not be in the A/C system if it was evacuated properly. The A/C needs to cycle to prevent freeze up of the evaporator. There is a temp sensor on the evaporator, one for incoming (warm) and one for outgoing(cold). you can see the vent temperature cycling up and down with the compressor cycling by using a probe thermometer in the air vent. Should get about a 30* differential below ambient temperature depending on the system.

If the A/C switch is off, A/C compressor should also be off. Unless you have climate control with temperature setting, then A/C - Heat will turn on/off as necessary.

as ive said 3 times already, ford cycles their a/c compressor when defrost is selected, whether you have the a/c switch on or not.
