As the title says, major pain.

My wife volunteered my expertise and service to help change out the clutch to one of her coworker's 2000 Taurus. Her son, daughter and I spent most of the afternoon on this project. we had to lift the car up, and drop the engine cradle and engine 8 inches so that the clutch was accessible through the wheel well...

There was about 1/4 inch clearance between the a/c clutch and the passenger inner structure on this car. made putting on the serpentine belt a real biatch.

ugh.
