Greetings all:

Purchased locally (in Pueblo, CO) in May 2003, my 1996 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab 4.0L was then seven years old with approximately, 122,500 miles showing on the odo. While fully functional at the time, it showed cosmetic signs of having been well-used (but not abused) over its’ early life. Cosmetics aside, I could live with ‘er being a bit rough around the edges in spots as my intent was to use ‘er, not as a daily driver, but as a “2nd vehicle” used primarily for home improvement store & junk runs and for the occasional back-country weekend outing.

This is a sample/stock image of a truck similar to mine as I do not have a pic of how she looked when purchased in 2003

Withing a year of its’ purchase, I was t-boned while driving my 1991 Honda CRX. Hit hard enough to have bent the frame, the insurance company totaled it; with it being 13 years old, the insurance settlement was minimal and not enough to even make a down-payment on a new car. With the recently acquired Ranger in hand, I made the decision that I would (temporarily) just use it as my DD, for as long as she lasted.

Subsequently, I acquired two other vehicles, both of which served to (at least seasonally) reduce the amount of use/mileage put on the Ranger. In 2005, I purchased a 2002 H-D Heritage Softail; this was sold in 2011 and the sales proceeds were used to help finance the purchase of a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible (which I still have). In 2017, I also purchased a 2014 Mustang to use as my daily driver; once again relegating my Ranger to “junk running” status. By this time, the odo had turned over 250K miles.

Having (mostly) sat idle for four plus years and driven only part-year for the twelve years prior to that, I’ve allowed a good deal of deferred maintenance to accumulate, fixing only those functional items that were necessary to keep “ol’ Greeny” running. I am now remedying those items and possibly upgrading others to return ‘er to a fully-functional and respectable off-roader. Let the journey begin…

I'd like to see that stang!!! Welcome the the best dang ranger forum around!

Beautiful stang. If its all original you might want to shade away from replacing the 289. Just for the value. Otherwise, its your car have fun roastin' tires.

Thank you... She's my pride and joy. Though mostly original from an appearance standpoint, mechanically it's been mildly restomod-ed with the addition of electric power steering and an AOD replacing the original C4. With 135K miles on the original 289, she's a bit tired and in need or refreshening. I won't be modifying the original engine, but rather removing and replacing it with a brand new built-up short-block + accessories, mirroring an original 289-Hipo in appearance. As with other "take-off" parts that have been replaced in the nine years I've owned 'er, I will retain the original block, heads, etc. for any future owner who might feel a need to rebuild it & return it to stock form.

With the long (holiday) weekend at and several parts on hand, I managed to get a few items knocked off my "to-do" list this weekend, including:
* Replaced the center console lid’s latch (again... This time with a billet aluminum piece, so I should NEVER have to do this again);

* Replaced the cruise control switches (which, while still function have long now dangled from the steering wheel due to their broken mounting tabs). Though this YouTube video is specific to a 2001 model (and noted as applicable to the 1998 through 2003 models), I found that the process was identical for my '96, so it's presumably applicable to both 1996 & '97 models as well;

* Replaced the rear stereo speakers

Still awaiting arrival of the replacement tailgate latch rod clips needed to repair the tailgate. These should be here by tomorrow & replaced shortly thereafter.
