I have a NOS OEM 4X4 Gem Module for my truck and have been told by 3 Ford mechanics that it is a plug and play. According to them there are only 3 GEM Modules, 1 for the 2 wheel drives, 1 for the 4 wheel drives, and one for the few electric ones around. Anybody know for sure that this is the case ?

That should be about right.

The General Electronic Module(GEM) 1998-2000 didn't need to be programmed, the ABS module calibrated speed sensor then passed that on to the GEM, cruise control and Computer.
And that was the "programmable part" needed on later model GEMs I believe.

The 2WD and 4WD would be the only difference, the rest were options that could be there or not be there, GEM wouldn't care either way

Thanks RonD for the fast reply and especially the info concerning the 98-00 4X4 not having to be programmed.:yahoo:

GEM replacement

Experienced problem with intermittent dome light and 4x4 actuator functioning. Trouble shooting led me to GEM. Got used one on eBay, disconnected battery, installed. Problem seemingly resolved but, on test drive. When auto trans shifts to 2 new gear, stalls and speedo says I am going 70-100 mph? If I shift the selector to low (1) 2wd, sputters but does not stall when his 5 mph and shifts to second...idles for 15 min after install and then sputtered around neighborhood for 30 min as a post said it would re-set itself after a while...bad GEM?....suggestions?

....suggestions?

I suggest you only post this in one place, so that all the answers, suggestions, and feedback are collected together.

I also suggest you start your own thread for your own problem, because your problem may be quite different from the problem the OP had, even if the symptoms are similar.

Thanks Scott for the advice. Posted my own thread. New to Forum so I appreciate your taking the time to helping me increase my chances of getting a response.
