My 99 ranger with 230,000 miles makes a load screaming noise every time I start it. It is just a second or two and as soon as the engine starts and I let go of the switch it goes away. I wounder if its the starter that is going out? any help is appreciated. Thanks

I had a cat under the hood one time...it only screamed once though...:icon_rofl:

other than that...maybe the starter gear is worn & won't engage into the flywheel gear-teeth correctly.....

Welcome to TRS Sahmadi! Your description is a little vague. Is it a scream, screech or squeal? If it happens right at start up then stops after the engine is running I'd say it's the starter. Those small gear reduction starters wear the end bushings faster than the old style starters giving you end play when it runs. Luckily our starters aren't that hard to replace so I'd take it off and have it bench tested. This way you can see if it's good or bad away from the truck and eliminate it as the problem or replace it.

Well since you say it only squeals or whatever when you turn the key to start and stops when you let off I would say its the starter and when you pull it out take it to auto zone or something and have them test it for free (more then likely it will squeal when its turned there too.)

but not necessarily. mine didnt when they tested it, it was just when it had the load of the flywheel on it. its only a few bolts that hold it on. drive it to autozone, take it off in the parking lot and try a new one. thats what i did.

but yeah id say your best bet is prob the starter.

It is realy nice to be a member of the Ranger Station. Not only you get good help but you get good jokes too. It is not always easy to describe how it sounds or feel. Sometimes is better to wait until you break down and then you know for sure what is wrong. Selecting from the chice of words provided from my Range Station friens, I think my truck screech at the start. I had that same problem. One day the motor went and when I changed the motor the problem went a way. I am suggesting that i am going to change my motor to fix the problem. Any more jokes?
