I have been looking over the other similiar threads on this topic and most seem to point to clogged fuel filter. I will shamefully admit I had 120,000 miles on my fuel filter before I changed it about a month ago. I tried to change the darn thing a few times over the years and couldn't get the barbs to release from the fuel line, I actually broke one of those cheap tools from autozone trying. Eventually my truck started occasionally hesitating under acceleration to the point where I would have the pedal almost floored and nothing much was happening. It definetely seemed like it wasn't getting enough fuel. I bit the bullet and cut the ends off the fuel filter so I could work on getting the barbs off easier (no turning back then). I finally replaced the filter and the truck seemed to run better and accelerate faster. So I thought the problem was solved. A week later or so I had the same episode where I had the pedal almost floored and the truck would not accelerate, after a few seconds it stops acting up and accelerates. It is starting to become more frequent so I am expecting one day soon I will be stranded somewhere. I initially thought the fuel pump was worn out since it had been trying to pump fuel through a clogged filter for 120,000 miles. However, a usual sympton on fuel pump issues is difficulty starting the engine, which i never have issues with. Idle is pretty decent for a truck with that many miles. The truck is getting older so there seem to be new noises and groans everyday, but nothing too far out of the ordinary
I am starting to notice the exhaust having more of an odor. Not unburnt fuel, but more of a sour smell. Probably unrelated, not sure. The fuel mileage really hasn't dropped much since I bought the thing @ 40,000 miles. I get around 20mpg, around 300 miles on 15 gallons of fuel. Reg cab, 4wd, 3.0l, 5sp. 3.73's. Any thoughts on what the issue may be?
