Hello,

I picked up a 99 ranger 4x4 with a 5R55E that has no reverse or 1st engine braking. I pulled the revers servo piston out and the tip is in pretty poor shape, cracked and missing some metal. I got a replacement piston but after closer inspection of the revers band through the servo hole it looks like the band may be out of position. I have searched for information on how to tell if the band is in place but cant really find any details on it.

Can anyone help me out here? Does the band fit in a slot inside the transmission? How can you tell if it is in position or if it is broken?

Thanks,
Chadd

Use a screw driver and push up on the band. You will be able to move it around. As long as you can see the recess where the piston pin rides in the band you should be fine on alignment, it will set in 2 lugs in the case. You will want to use a screw driver to make sure the band actually tightens around the drum, they were prone to breaking. If it has some resistance and springs back you are ok, if not the band is broke.

Thanks for the reply, I ended up getting a bore camera small enough to fit into the servo hole and found that the band had slid out of position. After about an hour or two of fiddling with it I was able to slide it back into place with a small screwdriver and pick. I got it all back together with the new servo rod/piston and now have reverse. Not sure how long it will last but it works for the time being anyway.

Thanks,
Chadd
