On a stock engine spark is spark. Stick to OEM plugs/wires/coils for best performance.

I tried the BWD wires with the E3 plugs and it seemed to help a little. For best performace increase I would go with a cold air intake, and good exhaust. I changed all of this on my 4.0 in my '99 Ranger and the gains were amazing. It even increased my mpg.

Somewhere on here someone had actually done dyno tests on their 4.0 and showed the CAI decreased power but dunno who it was or whether it was OHV or SOHC....

For effieciency, just maintain it well. I've had no issues in 5+ years of ownership just with good maintenance :dunno:

An increase in mileage would be VERY welcome!!!

If you are into headers try them out, I put a set on my 4.0 and it sounds great and gives a little bit of extra get up and go.

Ya... If I had a new truck and care to lower as I don't, then ya speed would count. If I wanted speed I'd go to a diff vehicle.

What brand of headers did you go with???

Here is a list of everything I did to my 00 4.0

My 4.0 page <----click

The headers didn't even give me a "seat of the pants" boost in power. All they really did was improve the exhaust sound and make the engine bay hot as hell.

Unless your stock coil is messed up I wouldn't spend the money on a new one.

The parts I installed that gave me the best improvement were the SCT Tuner, throttle body and electric fan.

I forgot to mention that the headers were the last engine mod I did on that truck. They might feel like they have done something on a truck that doesn't have as many mods as mine did but honestly I wouldn't recommend them unless you change the cam or do some other internal modifications.

Also, the throttle body will not give you a boost in power on a relatively stock engine. I have dyno results to prove that. BUT the increase in throttle response is well worth it.

If I did it all over again I would have just done the exhaust (because I like the sound), the tuner and the electric fan. I would have saved the rest of the money for a V8 swap. The amount of performance I gained for the money I spent on that truck was seriously underwhelming. If you don't want to swap the engine I would do all of the mods I did except the plug wires AND go ahead and port the intake, massage the heads and change the cam to the Comp 410 piece.

If you want more power and mpg look up comp cams. They make a great camshaft for the 4.0 motor

Thanks for the tips and I'll check out Comp Cams stuff now.

Would this be the 410 cam you are referring to???
