I found a 99 4.0 for a good deal. Will this bolt right into my 94 ranger? Is this still the ohv? Will it bolt up to my current automatic tranny? What do i need to make this work.

have both

I have both a 94 with a 2.3 and a 99 with the 4.0 and yes it is the OHV. Both automatics. what I can tell you is the 99 is a wider car by I think 2 or 3 inches. And there were 94 Rangers with the 4.0 in them. The tranny I do not know about, I would check the numbers. I have over 200K on my 2.3L and my 4.0 has 104K and both heads are cracked. If you have the 4.0L out, I would check for cracked heads, and replace the thermostat before running the engine. My thermostat stuck and that was all she wrote.

The 94/99 swap will work - if - you already have a 4.0. I have a 99 and put a 93 motor in it while I'm rebuilding the other engine. The only problem I found was the left motor mount, on the 93 was different - but the position of the motor mount was the same. Therefore i suspect the 99 will work there. You do not have a camshaft position sensor - i don't think. You will need to put the drive from your 94 motor in it's place. The last fix was that the y-pipe was wider on one engine than the other. I took the y-pipe off, used a big rat tail file to slot the holes and the bolts snugged it right up. I used all the 99 intake and computer setup with no problems. I'd really suggest the thermostat replacement and while you are at it - look at the plastic part that controls flow to the heater core. It's less than $20 at Autozone and if it breaks you'll lose your coolant in a heartbeat.
