99 2.5 timing question

My timing belt broke. Everything is off and I am ready to put the belt on. In the Haynes refering to tdc it says to make shure that the timing on the crankshaft is tdc on the gas stroke and not on the exaust stroke. With the belt broken I'm not shure which one it is on. Does this matter or can I just align up the dimonds with the oil pump, crankshaft, and camshaft and that sets the right timing?

Thanks for your help.

If you look closely you'll find that you have both diamonds and triangles to deal with, but it's really simple.

I'm doing this off memory and will check a spare motor later today to be sure I've got the diamonds and triangles straight.

Turn the crank until #1 cylinder is at TDC, disregard anything to do with what stroke the motor is on. Rotate the cam until the triangle on the sprocket lines up with the triangle on the back cover (between 4 and 5 O'clock). Rotate the oil pump sprocket so that the diamonds line up (12 O'clock). An easy way to check that the cam and oil pump sprockets are right is to look at the 'lump' sticking out of the back of the belt guide on each one, it should be pointing in the 3 O'clock direction on both of them. Then just carefully slip the belt on, release the tensioner but, don't tighten it down yet. Rotate the crankshaft clock-wise two full revolutions, then double check to be sure the timing marks are still correct, if so, tighten down the tensioner and assemble the remainder of the motor.

I put everything together but I'm getting no start. It fires right away and then lugs. I took everything back off to double check the alignment markers because when I put it together there is a half or less groove difference between the marks on the crank and the cam and oil pump. If I line up the cam and oil pump exactly on the marks the crank is turned sligthly counter clockwise from the notch. It looks tdc though and appears to be the only way to put it on right.

After I put it together agian I checked the trouble codes because the check engine light was on after not starting again. No codes. Does this mean the timing is set right? When the belt broke it put up a timing code.

I forgot the spark plug wire grease at the store. I had to put on new wires and plugs on the left hand side because when I pulled the plugs the wires snaped. I thought it would at least start without the grease. So far I have only replaced the left hand side. Would this grease or the fact that I replaced only one side with plugs and wires matter?

I've read of other rangers with the same problem after belt change....just havn't found the solution yet. Any advice will help as I am stuck at the moment. Thanks

some guy with a 2000 had the same problem.

"I figured out problem! The camshaft and secondary (oil pump) sprocket have two alignment marks each.........Book says nothing about that. I tried the other set of arrows and it fired right up! The books sure aren't very specific about things like this! "

I looked carefully though and only saw one set of marks. They were dimonds on the cam and oil sprokit but the cam mark on the engine was a triangle if I remember correctly. hmmm

The cam and oil sprocket are, in fact, both the same part, so they each carry both markings. If in doubt go by the 'nub' sticking out of the back of the sprocket's belt guide. On both of them that needs to point at 3 O'clock, as viewed from the front.

I took it apart and had another look. The crank is half a gear away from the timing mark on the engine. When assembled it lines up perfectly with the marks on the timing belt cover. It still wouldn't start. I tested the coil packs with the electronic voltmeter dealy on the resistance setting that is described in the hanyes manual. Zero resistance when putting them on the matched cylinder wire connections. When putting it on the main wire plug the resistance shot up really high and jumped down to zero.

If I did everything correctly and these coils are shot is there anything else I need to look at? I'll be replacing all the wires and plugs. I was reading online that someones water pump went out and that snapped thier belt.

Did you check for spark? Does the engine feel like it has compression?

Maybe on a 1.9 litre Escort motor but, not on Lima based motor. The water pump has no connection to the timing belt.

I got 2 new coils but when I checked the resistance they were the same as the old ones.....Hmmm. Not shure what the dealio is. I put the new ones in anyways and cranked it over. It sounded like it fired for a second then just turned over. A buddy held the plug near the frame but he couldn't see any spark when I turned it over again.

I'm not shure what it feels like when there is no compression but it feels normal when it turns over....but it has always started right away for me.

Thanks for all your help.
I gotta get this baby on the road.

Look at the tone ring on the fly wheel for missing teeth or for slippage.
I had the same problem and found my tone ring had slipped. Corrected it and truck is now running again. One way to check for slippage is to position the crank at TDC then look at the two teeth on the tone ring that are the widest apart. It should be at 1:00 O'clock position looking from the front at TDC.
