Okay...so I had a huge project. I replaced the engine in a 98 ranger with the engine out of a 94 explorer. The mileage isn't high and there isn't a big difference between the two. I bought the truck from someone who had blown the head-gaskets and filled the radiator with stop leak or whatever, anyways, it stopped up the heads. I don't even know about the block, but it is just damaged goods...it damaged the engine pretty severely. It also had blow-by. I got a hold of the engine out of an explorer and there aren't any leaks of any kind. The only difference was the piece that recognizes what the firing order is, I can't think of the name of the part. Anyways, everything is installed correctly but when you plug up the maf sensor, it idles very low and shuts off. I know that the only use for this sensor is to make the truck more fuel efficient and can be bypassed. I would like to have everything original but I don't have a clue what the problem is..I just know that it worked before we swapped the engines out. I have already replaced the part and still get the same response, it maybe the wiring but I don't know what to check for or what to ohm out.

it was caused by a slipping belt. not sure how that ties in, i plugged up the sensor and it worked. I still don't know what the problem was but I'm glad it is fixed

You need the Maf sensor. The ecu doesnt know how much air is entering the engine without it.
