My son up and bought him a 98 ext cab with a 3.0
nice little truck for a youngster, It sure seems to idle fast when you start it up and for a little while, Sticker under the hood says its not adjustable,

Also the Fan sure seems to make alot of Fan noise,
Whirlwind type sounds, its been in the high 50's low 60;s Should this fan
clutch be engaged this much in this cool temps?

I thought the fan clutchs were suppose to tighten up and turn more when the temps are high,

thanks

Dave

how "high" is "high"? mine idles around 1200rpm when it first starts and settles down after about 20 seconds, depending on how cold it is. Also, I don't know about the clutch on the fan really, but I know mine always seems to move a lot of air. This is the first vehicle I've owned -I found out the hard way- that I can't fill the washer fluid while its running:icon_twisted: but anyhow, I know my 3.0 and my friend's 3.0 both make a lot of noise with their fans. I honestly can't remember what my friend's 4.0 sounded like (he rolled it a few months back) and my other buddy's 2.3 is just quiet altogether from what I recall.

it shouldt idle to high in the low 50s and low 60s atleast for not long and if the fan cluthch is going out the fan noise will get louder and louder and you will hear and feel the difference in power and driveablity. if it doesnt get any louder and it does quiet down after a few mins you should be good just keep an eye on it

A high idle at start-up and for a short period thereafter is normal for the 3.0 engine.

I've since converted to an e-fan, but my stock fan was fairly quiet and the clutch didn't kick in until outside temps were in the mid to upper 80's, so you might need a new fan clutch if it's making a bunch of noise on cooler days.

Mine hits about 1300 in the summer for ten seconds or so then settles down to about 1000, during the winter it hits about 1600 for a bit then drops to 1200 and then settles down to 1000. My fan always moves a crap load of air regardless of the temp outside. If his is idleing higer than 1000 when its warm it may have a vac leak somewhere.
