so my 96 ranger with a 98 Explorer V8 swap wont start.
the Theft light on and flashing, I used the column, harness, computer, keys, everything from the explorer...

what am I missing here?

Which harness did you use, the engine harness, or the dash harness?? Because you are using an antitheft system on a non antitheft truck, you will need to replace the dash harness as well, along with the donor's steering column (which you say you have done), engine harness and ECU...Basically the whole electrical setup you need to swap over, cause the truck's harness does not have the circuits for the anti theft system..

yep I swapped the entire dash, dash harness, & engine harness.
all but the power door locks, maybe this is the trip up?

I read somewhere to disarm the theft system one locks and unlocks the car with the remote. I have the remote but no power locks on the truck.

My next possible screw up was cutting and grounding the Green and purple wire to the PATS box. (read this disables PATS)
After doing this I went from having all instrument cluster lights to just a simple blinking theft.

Reconnected the green/purple wire and no change.
Maybe I fried the PATS box?

There is a good possibility...try this, I forget the sequence, but you may have to re-program the chip inside the ignition key to the PATS module, have you tried this?? You can either have a dealer program it for you, or call them up and ask for the sequence, you have to turn the ignition on and off 5 or 6 times, then start it. I'm not sure of the number of times you have to cycle the ignition, but thats how to program it without goin to the dealers..

FWIW, my '97 Mustang will not start without unlocking it with the key fob.
Your truck may be similar.

The PATS and/or alarm arms automatically( referring to my car), whenever the door is locked (you can use the button inside, for example. I never make my car "beep").

If i open the door with the key, the factory alarm goes off, and it will not start.

Do you have the key fob? Have you tried to see if it will do anything?
I don't know what it controls, is it in the GEM module?

Rwenzing may be able to help you with this.

Good luck. If you get it to work, you'll be very happy to have PATS. Wish my truck did.

For PATS in a 98~2001 5.0 Ex to work, you need:
  • Transponder keys
  • Transceiver on the column near the key lock
  • PATS Module under the dash
  • PCM
  • Wiring to connect it all correctly

Then, if those parts are not all from the same donor vehicle, the PCM and PATS Module must be "introduced" to each other and the system must be taught to recognize the RFID's of the transponder keys. Both of these steps are done using a dealer tool.
