Got a 1995 ford ranger 4x4 xlt x-cab that had a v6 4.0. i hydrolocked the engine and bent a connecting rod, also screwed up the cylinder wall or whatever so it was toast. i came across a 1998 ford explorer with a v6 4.0 that had been totalled. i put the engine and tranny in my ranger but am having trouble getting it to run. any pointers, tips, hints, or advice will be greatly appriciated as my ranger is my only 4x4 source of transportation here in the ak.

I have never done the swap but I would think you need everything from the 95 motor installed on the 98 motor. I mean the wiring harness and all the sensors that are different. The 95 has an obdI computer and the 98 has an obdII computer

the 95 ranger is OHV and the explorer is SOHC. it can be done, but you need everything from the explorer including the electronics. might as well grab the rear axle while you are at it. you may need the transmission as well along with the T-case.

Obviously, you're oblivious to the fact that Ford offered BOTH the OHV and the SOHC in the Explorers from 97+.

To the OP - as has been stated, if you started with just a long block and transfered all the 95 intake, sensors, etc over, it should run. The main difference will be the cam position sensor - they are different and you'll need to make sure that you transfer your's (95) over and get it set properly - otherwise, it'll not be injecting fuel properly.

already got it sitting in my engine compartment with some things connected, the camshaft position sensor from my 95 is in the new 98, but it was shorter then the 98s and it also came with 2 wires instead of the 98s 3 wires.

That's interesting! I had a 95 4.0L Ranger & it was an EEC V with OBD 2?

Yes I'm being a smartass, Rangers went to an EEC V ECU in 1995.

i have a 1995 ford ranger. it is a 1996 model. dont ask me why, i dont know, but they released the 96 model in late 95 or something. but thats why it is obd 2.

Its actually going alot better, i have everything in but a coolant temp sensor which i broke, the exhaust, my belt, airbox and a bolt that holds my tranny dipstick tube on. so hopefully my next shop class i will have it running. i wasnt a member when i started this build otherwise i would have posted pictures of the dismantling and reassembly. but i will have many more projects for my ranger. peace out.
