Can anyone point me to detailed directions on how to replace both sets of bearings (pinion and carrier) in the rear of a 98 mazda b4000 4x4? Would be very much appreciated, I love this truck but can not afford the $1000 the garage wants.

it's not just a simple remove everything and then put it back. it's that expensive b/c the shop will have to check the backlash until they get it back to spec. that involves lots of installing and removing on the carrier/pinion and then reinstalling. not to mention, you need several special tools to do it.

check the tech library here though, there's a few write ups on it i think

For just replacing pinion and carrier side bearings there isn't much needed other than the bearings, press to install/remove them, a new crush sleeve and pinion seal and an inch lbs beam or dial type torque wrench to set pinion bearing preload. Remove and replace all bearings and reassemble everything as it came apart. Be sure to put all the shims back where they came from. Trickiest part is setting the pinion bearing preload with the crush sleeve.

You also have to shop around. I was lucky and found an older gentleman that built alxes for nascaar back in the day at a local lawn and garden shop. He still rebuilds axles for people in the back of the shop. He charged me $250 to compeletely rebuild my disc 8.8

Thanks much for the info guys, I had no idea it was that involved. I shopped around as Brinker mentioned and found a guy/shop that will do it for $450 with a warranty, so that is what I'm gonna do.:3gears:
