Hey Gang,

Long time reader, first time poster. I tried searching through this forum and even went through about 10 pages of postings and didn't see anything like my problem.

1998 4.0L 4x4 with the 5r55e automatic tranny .... same problem pretty much every day now.... transmission shifts through the first 4 gears just fine and then at speeds between 35 and 50 mph,,, it is really slow to engage the O/D.

Does this sound like a common problem or a major overhaul? I know it's tough to speculate on stuff like that, but I'm sure someone out there has had this experience before.

Thanks all!

Slow meaning slipping..like a long dragged out shift or it doesnt shift into 5th untill a higher speed or higher rpm's.

Slow like a long dragged out shift.... it will stay in 4th about 2,000 rpms and just sit there.... if I speed up and let off the gas quickly, then it will shift into O/D and drop down to about 1300 rpms. (O/D)

I agree with chadwx, I think it's fords shift points for the ranger that are a little off. Try driving a newer taurus and you'll see, different motors but same idea.
