Hello. Would someone please help me with finding the exact location of my starter solenoid and rest of starter system under the hood of my 98 4.0 V6 ?

The solenoid is on the starter motor itself there is no separate solenoid like on older models. The only other part of the system (besides the wires) is the starter relay which is located in the under hood fuse panel.

Thank you for the quick response.....I am sorry but I need to ask where the starter motor is located exactly. I've read it should be mounted to the to the frame near the battery but I can't seem to find it, as I don't recognize anything that looks like any starter motors I have seen .

I would be a happy man of I had a descriptive and detailed diagram of what's under my hood and where it should be. Haha. Don't think I haven't tried to find one.

The starter motor is bolted to the bottom of the engine where the transmission attaches.

It looks like this. The large round part is the motor itself, the smaller round part on top is the solenoid.

Cant find a good picture or diagram but here is a decent video on replacing the starter and solenoid.

You guys are great. Joining this forum was great idea for this mechanically-DEclined, but eager to learn -- grateful to do so.. guy!

Welcome to TRS!

Dirtman pretty much covered it. on the older Rangers (97 and below) there is a "solenoid" which is technically a relay mounted to the inner fender that gets electricity from the battery once the key is turned to start, which then energizes the solenoid on the starter and starts your truck. As Dirtman mentioned, the relay is in the fuse box on the newer trucks.

For the cost of admission... a Haynes service manual would be a good idea to buy.

If you have deeper pockets... hard to beat Factory Service Manuals. You can cruise eBay and find .pdf manuals that are totally affordable.

I think Haynes manuals are much easier for a novice to use and understand. The factory service manuals cover waaaay more info but the language, diagrams and layout are more "advanced" I guess would be the word.
