So, Im stationed in Germany, and Im about to ship my 97 ranger over here. Its gonna take 6-8 weeks to get here, and since last time I was home on leave i s*#! a tranny, I figure while im waitin on it I'll order a rebuild kit for the tranny i ended up swapping in there that is knockin on the door of 200,000 miles. Getting a rebuild kit shipped to Germany is much much easier than a replacement transmission so Im thinkin im just gonna be proactive.

I have never rebuilt a transmission before, so Im just curious to see if any of y'all got any words of wisdom and advice for me. The tranny is a 5 spd out of a 96 explorer from behind a 4.0.

I'd get a rebuild book or manual, as far as I know you just need to measure, measure, measure and get everything back together in the right order.

If you're in Germany and get get stuff shipped easily look for OM606 turbo motors from 98-99 benzes. They're awesome-you can get 400hp pretty easily and still have 25mpg if you're easy on the throttle.

Couple that with a getrag 265 from a bimmer and you're golden.

or "go native" and buy a cheap G can :D

I cant imagine its too difficult. There is a shop on post with a lift and all the tools I need. Any idea where i can find a rebuild manual?

And I actually can ship stuff back with my household goods once I move back to the states. so i'll definitely gonna have to look into that. Maybe that'll be the next gift to myself after this next deployment. I was plannin on doin either a 302 or 289 swap once i get back. we'll see. But for now just gonna rock the 4 liter. its only got 100k on it anyway.

It's not hard, pretty straight forward. If you can install a set of gears in an axle, you can rebuild the m5od. You will need a couple special tools to remove a couple bearings. Other than that basic hand tools including a couple snap ring plyers is all you'll need. A manual is recommended, should be able to get them from the same company you get the rebuild kit from, or eBay...

I have never installed gears in an axle. But i do understand how to do it. and I'm sure i could pull it off. I'd probably have to by some of the special tools required. or figure somethin out. or just have a shop press bearing on/off for me for a small fee. Thanks SVT

Just for S#@!s and giggles I did some googling of different diesel swaps people have done. found a couple with the mercedes 606. that would be badass. not sure if its a headache i wanna get myself into tho.

May I suggest you take a VERY thourough look for possible/probable import restrictions on non-stock vehicles.
Nothing rains on a parade worse than having a vehicle impounded by customs.
The same applies when shipping it BACK to the states.

Yes I'm very familiar. I've thought about that angle to. I did some googling just to drool a little, but honestly don't think I have quite that much ambition. I think I'll be just stickin with a 302 that a buddies got waitin for my return from Germany. Thanks anyway tho.

I actually did look into the customs just to be sure, and because I'm military I get a little of a break and no one will even look at me twice as far as the way she sits now.
