Hey everyone, was wondering if anyone could help me. I've just notices that in my 97 2.3l 2wd Ranger I've been having trouble shifting into 1st at any speed higher than 15 mph I'll be in 4th then ill be coming up to a stop so ill just put it in 1st since I have to take off from a stop but it's tough to put it in 1st gear Unless rolling 15 mph or under. I was maybe think it's the sycros but not sure. Any other info would be great thanks.

check fluid level in trans also look for and repair leaks. try shifting from 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 instead.

Probably clutch assembly issue, could be you need to rebleed system or pilot bearing is getting a little stiff.

When you push in the clutch pedal the input shaft for the transmission should now be free to match speeds with the output shaft(drive line).
So the input shaft can either speed up or slow down depending on the output shaft speed and the gear you are selecting.

Clutch not fully disengaging would of course hinder that speed matching, as would the pilot bearing.

Try reving the engine with clutch pedal in and see if it slides into 1st gear easier at higher speed, if so then something is turning the input shaft a bit.

You can't put trans into 1st gear at any speed, general rule of thumb is whatever the top speed accelerating for that gear is then that would be the highest speed you would want to downshift in.
The output shaft speed would just be too high, so would be hard to match

RonD I tried revving the motor and it did slip into 1st easier when not moving but when moving still the same thing still tough going into 1st over 15

What is the maximum speed you go in 1st before shifting to 2nd?
Not racing, lol, just normal driving

Try to shift in to 2nd gear first, at higher speeds, to get input shaft spinning faster, and then try to got into 1st.

At what speed are you trying to shift into 1st gear, I know it won't go in until you get down to 15mph, but it certainly shouldn't go into 1st gear above 30mph

I shift out of 1st prolly around 10mph and I use to be able to go from 4th to 1st still holding the clutch of course. And then take off from first
