97 ranger axle

Hello, I have a quick question before I tear into this axle. My son slid in snow and hit an object and from the looks of it has bent his drivers side rear axle. The tire wobbled horribly on drive home(about a mile). The rim looks ok. When I looked under truck the drum looked to bent in on bottom. Not cuz it was bent but because the end of axle where it bolted to tire seems bent. I think there has been an axle swap on this truck but cant find any numbers. If anyone has a more specific place to look for numbers it would be appreciated, also to get the drivers side axle out of housing do I need to pull rearend cover off? Wasn't sure if this had C clips or just axle bolted to housing behind brakes. Any help or pics appreciated. Thanks Don

if it is a 7.5 or a 8.8 they both have c clips inside the housing you have to take the diff cover off. if its not a 7.5 or 8.8.. you can also look on the housing there is a tag usually on the axle. you can also tell by the diff cover scroll to the bottom of this page and it shows the difference between a 7.5 and 8.8.

yes, take the diff cover off, pull the cross pin lock bolt out, slide the pin out (or just enough to push the axle shafts in to get the C clip out) pull the shaft then put the new one in...

have some extra shafts from a 7.5 if you need to buy some

If he hit it hard enough to bend the axle or drum, I would double check that rim.
