i have a 97 ford ranger with the 2.3 and i want to put in the 4.0 into it. what years can i fit in the 97?

Welcome to TRS :)

1995 to 2012

You need the engine and transmission, 2 wheel drive.
Also the computer and engine wiring harness for the 4.0l, and Exhaust system

1995 to 2000 4.0l has 160 horse power
2001 and up 4.0l engine has 200hp

If you can find a rolled or otherwise damaged Ranger with 4.0l as a donor thats the best way to go, all the need parts will be there, motor mounts transmission mounts, bits and pieces that you will need.

An explorer V8 swap is the same amount of work, so..............

so if a person was going to do the explorer V8 swap, would those years stated above also work for the swap.

thanks

No, 1996/1997 are the best V8 explorer years to use for V8 swap

1998-2001(last year with 5.0l engine) will work OK just have to deal with PATS anti-theft system, which is not a big deal, just an extra step in the swap

Will have to likely source a transmission from a separate donor, the vast majority of 5.0 Explorers were AWD... assuming your 2.3 '97 is 2wd.

They made a few 2wd 5.0 Explorers, more popular down south but they are not common.
