when ever i fill my tank completly full of gas it leaks a puddle of fuel? what could this be. Also my engine runs ruff or a little bit less power when the tank is completly full. Does this have anything to do with the gas tank problem.

How do you fill it?Do you keep putting gas in till it won't take anymore or do you shut it off when it first clicks? No check engine lights?

i let it stop it self and i dont force anymore in it, just a regular fill up! No check engine light

check the hose that runs from the tank to the bed for cracks. i'm not sure if you have the same one as my 94 has, but i know the ones on the older trucks like mine are notorious for breaking/cracking. ford only part for 360 bucks. er maybe not i think someone posted a link for an aftermarket one that was a bit cheaper...ill look. edit: found some on ebay for under 100 dollars. and it appears you do have the same one on your 97 as my 94.

yep this appears to be an all-too-common problem. same thing with mine, the fuel filler hose is cracked and leaks only when i let the thing become full. if i stop the pump before the tank fills up, it doesnt leak. only when i fill it all the way up and there is fuel left in the hose that cant go into the tank. when that happens, it leaks out onto the ground.

is there an easy/cheap way to fix this?

my mechanic told me 1) i had to drop the gas tank to fix it, which he wanted $250 for.

and 2) he said ford wont sell just the hose part, iw ould have to buy a whole new fuel tank for ~$750. anyone know any alternatives?

Tank Leak

Try looking around your area for a Pick and Pull auto recycling parts yard. a whole tank assy out of a Ranger might cost less than $100.........It may go by a different name near you...used to call them "u-wrench-it" around here...

no way dude, go on ebay and buy the hose for 100 bux and if you're mechanically inclined enough pull the bed or drop the tank, either way. Most people say to pull the bed, but i've dropped the tank twice to do the filler hose and the pump, after you get it figured out only took me like an hour and a half to drop it, replace the hose, put it back together and clean up. it's deffinitely not part of the tank on any ranger i've ever seen, and save yourself the hassle of trying to get one out of the scrap yard, if you're VERY lucky and find one you'll have a hellufa time trying to get that old rubber to stretch like a new one.
